Sunil Gavaskar, the renowned Indian cricketer, has shared his insights on the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy series set to take place in Australia. With India needing to secure victories in a minimum of four Tests out of the remaining five matches within the World Test Championship (WTC) 2023-2025 cycle to secure direct qualification to the final, Gavaskar expressed skepticism about India’s chances of achieving a 4-0 victory against Australia on their home turf. Emphasizing the importance of focusing on the Border-Gavaskar Trophy itself, Gavaskar advised against getting distracted by the implications for the WTC final.

Gavaskar, in conversation with India Today, expressed his optimism about India’s performance in the Test series against Australia. He conveyed that while a 4-0 victory would truly make him ecstatic, he believes that aiming for a 3-1 win is more realistic. The focus, according to him, should be on winning the series in Australia rather than worrying about the World Test Championship final. The important thing is to secure a victory, be it 1-0, 2-0, 3-0, 3-1, or 2-1, in order to uplift the spirits of Indian cricket fans.

India has emerged victorious in the last four Test series against Australia, each with a margin of 2-1. Notably, two of these series were held in Australia.

Australia’s most recent triumph over India in a Test series dates back to the 2014/15 season, a decade ago.

Exploring the Potential Outcomes of the World Test Championship (WTC)

Even though India theoretically requires four victories to secure qualification, it is improbable that they will need to triumph in all matches. This is due to the scenario where the competing nations for the WTC final will be playing against each other, potentially affecting each other’s outcomes.

The upcoming cricket schedule includes Australia visiting Sri Lanka, followed by Sri Lanka touring South Africa, which will then host Pakistan. In parallel, New Zealand is set to host England for a series of three Tests, adding excitement to the potential fluctuations in the World Test Championship standings.
