‘Will Miss Out On Opportunities’, Say Students After Canada Eliminates Popular Visa Scheme
Recently, Canada eliminated the popular Student Direct Stream (SDS) visa programme, which allowed foreign students to obtain study permits more quickly in Canada. The move has left several Indian students disappointed. “It’s not right to stop visas midway. There are so many opportunities and dream jobs we will miss out on,” one student told ANI.
“I was trying to go to Canada but the situation is that Canada has stopped the visa.
The Student Direct Stream (SDS), launched in 2018, aims to provide faster visa processing for eligible post-secondary students from 14 countries, including India, Antigua and Barbuda, Brazil, China, Colombia, Costa Rica, Morocco, Pakistan, Peru, Philippines, Senegal, St Vincent and the Grenadines, Trinidad and Tobago, and Vietnam.
The Canadian government has removed the Nigeria Student Express (NSE). Eligible students can now apply through the regular study permit stream, which accepts Guaranteed Investment Certificates as proof of financial support.
The Canadian government stated, “This change will not adversely affect eligibility for those who wish to apply for a study permit from a country where the SDS or NSE initiatives were offered. All students, regardless of their eligibility for the SDS or NSE, must meet Canada’s study permit application requirements.”
