New Delhi:
Amish Shah, a Democrat of Indian descent, has surged ahead in the initial stages of the Congressional District election in Arizona. Outpacing the incumbent David Schweikert, Shah has established a slight advantage in a region spanning Scottsdale, Paradise Valley, and Fountain Hills.
The current leader in the election race is Mr. Shah, holding 50.9 percent of the vote share, while Mr. Schweikert trails behind with 49.1 percent, as reported by the New York Times.
Within a region traditionally known for its Republican dominance, a notable shift has occurred, transforming it into one of Arizona’s most fiercely contested districts, chiefly due to the substantial number of Independent voters, comprising almost a third of its electorate.
For two decades, Mr. Shah has dedicated himself to working as an emergency room physician. In 2017, he transitioned into politics, winning a seat in the Arizona House of Representatives. He is particularly passionate about healthcare reforms and advocating for increased salaries for teachers.
